On June 27th, the first AmCham Certificate Government Affairs Training Program was successfully launched. This program was operated by Yuan Associates, a government affairs consultancy boutique, and Intellect Associates, a professional training organization. As the first course of a Government Affairs Training Program, the theme of this training was “Good to Great: Results-Driven Business Advocacy.” The objective was to improve the trainees’ capacity for strategic thinking, stakeholder management, and communication and analysis, through effective interactive participation. Since the launch of the course, it has been well received. Due to public demand, the organizers increased capacity for enrollment several times.

On the day of the course, Mr. Yuan Haiying, the President of Yuan Associates, delivered the keynote speech first. He introduced the history of China’s government affairs. During these years of development, government affairs work has become more professional and systematic. In addition, Mr. Yuan stated that the current government affairs work should be based on a professional matrix government affairs practice, a win-win strategic working objective, effective communication with both external and internal stakeholders, and research on the literature, history, and philosophy of China. Innovation by keeping up with the times is the most vital part of government affairs.

In the following training course, instructors Gao Lin, of Intellect Associates, and Brent Yuan, of Yuan Associates, led the trainees’ interactive topic discussion. Based on the case study, they divided up the everyday working procedures, analyzed separate relevant tasks, and explained learning points to trainees through discussion so as to improve their mindset and summarize the working models.

We are honored to have invited Mr. Patrick Wang, the National Head of IA&PR&CC of Ferrero and former Vice President of AmCham China, Ms. Li Lu, the representative of GM & Associates, and Ms. Piper Stover, the Executive Vice President of United Technologies China. They shared their professional working experiences, ideas, and insights with the trainees.

The trainees that participated in this course were from various industries, including manufacturing, agriculture, food, service, finance, and etc. They all gave a very high evaluation of the course, stating that it was “very professional and systematic,” “highly practical,” “innovative,” and that it was the only on-the-ground government affairs training they had ever received in their years of GA work. In late September, the second course of this training program will be launched in AmCham China. The theme of this next course will be “Policy Research.”
